In 2001, when I received the brief to create a symbol for a new traffic charging scheme to be introduced in Central London, the details were rather sketchy. It was almost two years before the Congestion Charge was actually launched.

What was clear, however, was that the design of the symbol would have to be easily recognisable, comply with traffic signage regulations and would also be easily applied onto the street surface.
