ABOUT
The Practice House - which was the Seville’s College Headquarters from 1771 to 1954-was the residence of the Jesuit fellowship until 1767, when they were expelled from Spain by Carlos III. Originally, the building was erected in 1558, sheltering a College of Humanities. But in 1579 it turned into the company homeplace. Its first definition was based on the plans by the architect Jesuit Giuseppe Valeriani. Besides that, Bartolomé de Bustamante projected the sumptuous church, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin. Years after, the floor plan was redesigned by the architect Juan Bautista Villalpando. Consequently, the original the Jesuit residence would be demolished in order to rise the new Fine Arts College, which author is the architect Jose Galnares Sagastizábal. Broadly speaking, this intervention settled a contemporary building with three floors under the street level. On the other hand, the new implantation respected some historical features of the complex, recovering the position and dimensions of the original courts though with a different external volumetry. The installation reconciles the present with the past; an attempt to delete the barriers created in the 70s with the breakdown of the original building and the construction of the contemporary one. This work defines a visual concept of the right Roman Ius Imaginum, where the past wisdom people were respected and venerated as a worthy source. As well as former pater families did, we make a proposal that represents the former Jesuits inhabitants of the complex in a common day of 1600. The installation is formed by 12 anthropomorphic pieces realizing daily tasks as walk, pray or conversation. The friars are distributed through the public space of the building, locating a major number of them in the former cloister. Furthermore, they are made of plywood and its construction supposes the sum of two planes twhich define every sioulette shape. The simplicity of the forms and of his assembly are a sensible concept related to contemporary sculpture. Finally, we would like to point out that this project’s target is focused on opening a dialogue between the primitive building and the current one, between their past inhabitants and people who walk through its corridors nowadays.
