About me

A sub through and through, I trained with the best. As a Daily Mail trainee I spent two years working my way around the newsroom, honing my skills under the pressure of daily deadlines and fearsome editors. In a paper that considered clean copy a badge of honour mistakes were not looked kindly upon and attention to detail was a necessary survival skill.

Unlike most subs I worked in a wide variety of disciplines, from news to features via travel and the occasional stint on the sport's desk. My passion for writing served me well as I adapted to a wide range of styles, all the while striving for the holy grail of journalistic writing: the ability to shift seamlessly from one voice to another.

I am by no means a one trick pony and good subbing is not all about words. Understanding how those words fit with the rest of the page separates the excellent from the average. My flair for page design and my experience at the Mail Online helped me land the role of content editor and developer on the new iPad and Android app, Daily Mail Plus. There I turned my hand to everything, from photo editing to graphic design, and took on senior responsibilities as a section editor for news and features.

At Mail Plus adhering to strict timings meant the difference between leaving work at 2am or 6am so efficient workflows from planning to post-production were essential. Content editors also had to be flexible, and I spent much of my time adapting copy and headlines I had written earlier for the paper into iPad and Android formats.

I left the Daily Mail in the summer of 2014 to combine my first love, writing, with my second, travel. I reported on the Indian elections for The Independent and visited destinations as diverse as Lithuania and Bolivia for the Daily Mail Online and CNN. But despite the thrill of independence I still crave the buzz of a newsroom and the satisfaction of perfecting and crafting copy into stories that translate instantly.

I sincerely hope you consider me for this position.

With kindest regards,

Jack Davidson
