ABOUT

The concept for my collection was the windrush generation. I am 3rd generation windrush and my collection is in dedication to my grandparents and their journey and experience coming to the United Kingdom in the 1950s from their home St Kitts. The silhouettes are a contemporary twist on the 1950s new look. A big aspect of my collection is nostalgic of the kitsch decoration of their typical westIndian home I grew up visiting as a child. Clashing prints are the essence of the westIndian home decor, in the wall paper and carpets. There is also reference to the tropical plantation in the Caribbean and maps of the West Indies. I have reused and reworked old crochet table cloths and doilies into the collection, making a connection to family home but also making collection sustainable. Because of using digital printing I have been able to make the collection 0 waste with any left over fabric being used in accessories. The collection is a celebration of the windrush generation and how it has enriched British culture to be as we know it. All prints are by me and taken from my own drawings paintings, hand drawings and batik drawing.
