‘Opening up the national heritage of the Royal Hospital Chelsea’ was a transformative project to give the public and armed forces veterans access to the RHC’s fantastic heritage, and to share their care model through interpretation and outreach. At the same time, it brought back into service The Soane Stable Yard, a building complex of significant international architectural importance.

We worked closely with the client and consultant team to take the project from the earliest concept stages to completion in October 2024.

The Pensioners’ story is at the heart of the experience throughout. The displays we created are object rich, including careful use of AV, audio and interactivity. Key aspects are dementia-facing, and all elements are designed for optimum accessibility. A core aim is to encourage the uptake of a Pensioner led guided tour, a unique and memorable experience.

We developed fully immersive AV experiences, projection mapped to both the building and small- scale architectural models to bring the history of the hospital to life.

In addition to the museum, we also designed and fitted out a new shop and Post Office for the hospital, working with the hospital’s retail consultant, internal stakeholders and the Post Office to create a vibrant new retail experience for the site.
