ABOUT
The PDSA Dickin Medal is the highest award any animal can receive whilst serving in military conflict. It is recognised worldwide as the animals’ Victoria Cross. Instituted in 1943 by PDSA’s founder Maria Dickin CBE, it acknowledges outstanding acts of bravery or devotion to duty displayed by animals serving with the Armed Forces or Civil Defence units in any theatre of war throughout the world.
In 2018, the PDSA celebrated 75 years of the Dickin Medal with an exhibition held at the Imperial War Museum in London, to honour all 72 recipients of the Medal. I worked with PDSA's small in-house team to create the entire exhibition from the ground up along with commisioned illustrators and The Olivier, Tony and OBIE award-winning British designer Rae Smith, famous for her work on War Horse.
We recognised early on that the all of these amazing animals deserved equal recognition, as a result I designed 72 individual books to honour these incredible animals and tell their stories. These worked together with the main exhibition to engage, inform and educate the public about the Dickin Medal and the Resolute, Relentless, Fearless and Diligent animals to receive it.
