nomad is a new independent magazine published by hw design, subtitled The Magazine for New Design Culture, Business Affairs and Contemporary Lifestyle. It offers a multifocal perspective on design by viewing it within the context of society, the economy, lifestyle and culture and asking how it relates to future trends.
The title, nomad – where to go? is an expression of a contemporary way of life, in which it seems that what we know and are familiar with is changing, being called into question and being redefined.
nomad does not consider design with a focus on the object, but instead people and their circumstances: these people are, after all, the users of design experiences. The choice of “nomad” as a title refers to nomads, members of pastoral tribes who are constantly seeking out temporary places to live. They are free and tailor their lives to only their own needs and aspirations.
“How far will people go for the chance of a liveable future?” Searching for Jonas, an Eritrean refugee, in Sudan takes photographer Matthias Ziegler and journalist and author Michael Obert to Khartoum, the central transit point for refugees from the whole of Africa. nomad takes a look at their travel notes: five portraits paradigmatically reveal the fates of people who are fleeing various circumstances. Wolfgang Tillmans, a photographer and artist living in Berlin and London, started his EU Campaign as a personal fight against Brexit and grants us access to his diary entries written during the course of the referendum. nomad also presents Political Youth”, a long-term project by Robert Ormerod that portrays young Scottish politicians. In Vienna, nomad spoke to Ben Knapp from Saffron Brand Consultants about Nation Branding.
These are just four of the eleven articles from the second issue of nomad, which shares contemporary stories that challenge the way we think about design and open up new horizons. We use an international perspective to present socially-relevant topics which are of importance for the future and relate to design, society, business and travel.
