The BBC's Festival of Funny celebrates the best in comedy from past, present and future. And in the inaugural 2021 event, Emma Sidi's telenovela spoof 'La Princesa de Woking' provides a memorable highlight in the comedy shorts showcase.

The series pilot, directed by Big Red Button, follows the titular princesa Becky Hello (Sidi), who is shocked to discover at her mother's own funeral that her father has married gold-digger Mrs Buckingham. It's a laugh-inducing parody of British and Latin American cultural tropes, where high drama and shocking twists at a Home Counties cul-de-sac provide bags of tightly-wound humour.

We composed the score to the soap opera parody, with ominous piano motifs and sudden, sharp strings exaggerating the overblown suspense. An ecstatic closing salsa, meanwhile, ensure that references to Brexit and the NHS feel as surreal and incongruous as the Wotsits-and-wine spread at Mrs Hello's funeral.
