Concept
The National Theater of São Carlos, a cornerstone of Portuguese cultural heritage since 1793, sought to connect with a younger audience aged 6 to 11. The challenge was to create a film that would reveal the hidden wonders of the theater—its spaces, the people who work there, and lesser-known curiosities—making this cultural gem relatable and engaging for children while preserving its legacy.

Execution
The project, titled “What’s Behind the Cloth?”, began with the idea of exploring the theater through the eyes of an 8-year-old. Duarte, a child chosen as the film’s guide, teamed up with Jorge, an experienced theater insider, to take children on a journey behind the scenes. The film combined directing, post-production, motion graphics, and illustration to create a vibrant, educational, and visually engaging experience. The content highlighted backstage elements, from the theater’s history to its day-to-day operations, while maintaining a tone that resonated with young viewers.

Results
The final film successfully introduced the National Theater of São Carlos to a younger generation, making the theater’s spaces and stories accessible and captivating. By blending a child’s perspective with a seasoned guide’s expertise, the project fostered curiosity and appreciation for Portuguese cultural heritage among its target audience.
