ABOUT

Concept
Paladin, a Portuguese sauce brand primarily recognized for its mustard, sought to redefine its positioning to expand its presence in the national market. Mendes Gonçalves aimed to transform Paladin into a symbol of product quality, representing the innovative spirit of both Portugal and the company itself. The challenge was to elevate Paladin beyond its association with a single product and establish it as a versatile, high-quality brand rooted in Portuguese identity. The concept, “Spices of Portugal,” positioned Paladin as a brand that encapsulates the flavors and creativity of Portuguese cuisine. Central to this repositioning was the use of rhymes - a distinctive feature of the Portuguese language—to build a playful, memorable, and culturally resonant communication style.

Execution
The rebranding began with a comprehensive brand strategy that focused on giving Paladin a unique identity as a representation of Portugal’s culinary innovation. The communication tone was crafted to be bold and distinctive, breaking the conventional codes of the sauce category. Rhymes became a hallmark of Paladin’s messaging, giving each product a unique and catchy voice. The packaging design played a crucial role, with black bottles and the bold red tongue symbol, signifying flavor and spice. This design choice stood out in a crowded marketplace, reinforcing Paladin’s unique positioning. Collaborating with brand strategists Graça Martins and Vasco Durão, designer José Mendes (MAGA), and Mendes Gonçalves’ R&D and design teams, the project created a cohesive brand identity that extended across all touchpoints, from packaging to internal activation initiatives.

Results
The rebranding established Paladin as an innovative and recognizable brand, both nationally and internationally. The tongue symbol became synonymous with the brand’s promise of bold flavor and spice, while the rhyming communication style continues to define its tone across dozens of products. Since 2012, Paladin’s consistent branding has not only increased market share but also garnered international awards, solidifying its reputation as a proud representative of Portuguese culinary identity.
