Back in July 2024 myself and three colleagues from Magicalogical found ourselves invited to Leeds for a final training camp, where the Great Britain Rugby Sevens 2024 Olympic Female Squad had qualified to participate in the upcoming Paris Olympics.

A squad full of international superstars and a player who was and still is ranked the best in the world.

The brief was simple, to capture photography and videography of the camp, that we could use throughout lots of proposed team marketing.

Two additional supporting projects that I played the creative role in also included…

1. Squad changing room name plates.
2. Bespoke changing room rug.

Name plates - After a day of capturing moments both in the gym and out on the field. My role was then to capture portrait photography of each member of the squad as they returned from afternoon practice. From these shots, I then created a Team GB inspired themed device that would sit above the players kit hung in the dressing rooms.

Changing Room Rug - Discussions took place in the weeks leading up to the games about having some kind of focal centre piece where the team could huddle over in final pre-match gatherings.

The team had a secret, focussed all around the sunflower. This led me to explore a design created from the shape of a rugby ball which in turn created a bespoke Sunflower that represented each of the 14 players of the squad. Finished with a motto that the team used.

These pieces at first may seem quite insignificant but they played a huge part in bonding for the team.

It was a great honour just to help capture some training camp moments but then also to create these additional pieces that went on to play its part in The Olympic Games.
