Produced by Drakes for Fenwick, the shirts are made of the finest Italian milled poplin fabric from Carlo Riva and cut and sewn in Somerset. The button-down design features a soft collar and a squared-off cuff. The timeless tie is 100% cashmere and knitted in the UK to the perfect width and length.
Growing up in the North East what were your earliest memories of Fenwick, as it celebrates 140 years?
Fenwick’s department store was already a legend in Newcastle when I was growing up. It was the most glamorous shop on the high street and set the standard. I did a lot of window shopping when I was a lad, and they always had great displays. I remember the perfume department was particularly good.
For this exclusive collection, what specifications make this menswear shirt and tie collaboration so special?
I’ve had a long lasting friendship with the Fenwick family, and to celebrate their 140th year, we’ve put together a couple of shirts in two shades of blue. We’ve also done a dark blue knitted tie. Nowadays, ties are a little out of fashion, but this simple American style is quite cool, and can be worn anywhere. Simple, classic clothing never goes out of style.
Your new book ‘Lyrics’ brings together your work across 17 albums. Are there any words that feel particularly special to you right now?
These songs are all special to me in different ways. Some of them were written a long time ago, but thankfully they still resonate with me and my audience.
You have referenced in the past Cinema as a significant influence on your lyrics. Would you say the same for dressing?
The world of cinema has been a big influence on my work as an artist, and also in my taste in clothes. I’ve always liked old movies such as Casablanca, The Third Man and many of the golden Hollywood musicals. Fred Astaire and Cary Grant wore superb clothes – Saville Row tailored suits and ties.
Fenwick have recently launched their own Spotify playlist. What song would you add to remember this collaboration?
I would choose my song 2HB, which is a tribute to the film star Humphrey Bogart.
What are two essential wardrobe pieces to have with you on tour?
A warm coat and scarf are always useful. And needless to say, a blue shirt and knitted tie.
