Most systems this complex get drawn as a tree - a root, branches, sub-branches, endless nesting. For Control AI, a regulatory intelligence platform mapping a nation's laws, we deliberately chose orbits instead. Here's why that one decision shaped everything.

A tree implies hierarchy with a top and a bottom, but a country's legal system doesn't work that way. The Constitution isn't "above" a ministry the way a manager is above an employee; everything relates back to it radially, from every direction at once. So we placed the Constitution at the center and let ministries, authorities and regulations orbit it in concentric rings, the closer the ring, the tighter the tie to the core.

That single choice solved three problems at once. It gave every node equal visual access to the center, so no branch feels more important by accident of position. It let us pack hundreds of entities into one screen without the tangle a tree would create. And it turned navigation into something intuitive, you don't traverse branches, you rotate and zoom, the way you'd explore a map of the sky.

The color-coded legend does the rest of the work: Constitution, Entities, Legislation, Services, Regulations - each a distinct hue, so the eye sorts categories before it even reads a label.

One decision - orbits over branches - and the whole system became something you can read at a glance instead of decode.
