I would like to share a project that I’ve been wanting to publish for a long time. It was an absolute pleasure to execute, both for the sheer challenge and the subject matter.
In 2022, ahead of the Qatar World Cup, Ovni Agency reached out to me to work on upscaling 3 images of Diego Maradona. These 3 images happen to be some of the most iconic scenes of the "10" from the Mexico '86 World Cup.
The challenge wasn't just to upscale them to the required size and resolution to be displayed in an immersive experience across giant LED screens. I also had to completely reconstruct and complete them, as they were original TV broadcast captures and photographs whose grain and small format made them impossible to enlarge using standard methods.
Therefore, the approach was first to upscale, adjust textures, and refine details based on the exact references, and then fully reconstruct the images to showcase Diego in a full-body view.
In some cases, the upscaling was massive considering the low-resolution starting reference.
Given the scale and the tight deadline, it was truly a beautiful challenge. Now, in the build-up to the new 2026 World Cup, what better way to celebrate than by remembering one of the greatest footballers of all time?
