ABOUT

So this was a self-funded short animated horror film we devised and produced back in 2013 and released on Halloween. We'd have liked to spend loads more time on it to refine the characters and animation but we had to squeeze it in between the paying work. Be warned it's not for those with delicate sensibilities or a dislike of supernatural horror.

People all around the world are familiar with the bogeyman, and although it’s often known by different names in many other cultures, the creature universally stands as a pure embodiment of terror. We wanted to produce something innovative, unfamiliar and unique that isn’t often associated with animation. People don’t often expect animation, that apparently child friendly medium, to tackle sinister and disturbing subject matter. Bogeyman is aimed at doing just that, a sort of antithesis to folk/fairy tales as told in animated form by Disney.

Rather than clothe our bogeyman in the stereotypical menacing cowl, synonymous with The Black Riders from Lord of the Rings and the Dementors from Harry Potter, we decided to bring the bogeyman into the modern age by dressing him in a hoodie; a garment which, at the time had risen in notoriety due to Cameron's 'hug a hoodie' campaign and the later riots/looting in London and Manchester. The animation was therefore a bit of a tongue in cheek dig at the socio-economic prejudice that arose at the time, with the soul-less hoodie wearing bogeyman creating more soul-less, anti-social youths.

The film did well on the horror film circuit and still has a bit of a cult following online which we're obviously really pleased with.
