ABOUT

This project's brief was to tell a visual story using word and image in the form of a booklet; the topic was completely free for me to choose. I knew I wanted to choose a taboo topic on something I was passionate about; even though it wasn't out of my comfort zone, I knew it would be for a lot of people, which gave me all the more reason to tell this story as a way of spreading a message.

I chose to create my piece on the trial of Brock Turner, a university student found guilty of rape but only served 3 months in prison due to the judge's incompetence, a complete injustice to the victim, Chanel Miller. I first heard of this case when Chanel's (who only recently revealed her identity) victim impact statement went viral; most of my text is taken from this.

I used a motif of wine stains frequently; representing both alcohol as well as blood, and the way drinking culture is used as a way to blame the victim of a crime.

The definitions highlight the irony in that the seriousness of the crime is being overlooked; for example, Turner was featured under the definition of 'rape' in a criminology textbook, in spite of the fact he only served 3 months in prison.

I sewed the booklet together with white thread.
