The holiday season is the Super Bowl of the retail world—a high-stakes moment when brands compete fiercely for attention, engagement, and conversions. Yet in an increasingly saturated market, it’s harder than ever to stand out.
The old formulas—cranking up ad spend, rolling out predictable festive visuals, and hoping for the best—simply won’t cut it anymore.
To rise above the noise, brands need bold strategies that prioritise creativity, connection, and innovation. Here’s how to do just that, with insights from industry experts Adam Charles, Ewald Damen, and Mark Byrne.
A Season Without Borders
The lines between seasons have blurred, and with them, the traditional rules of holiday marketing. As Adam Charles, EVP at Sparks, explains:
“Seasons are no longer finite—giving way to a new era of blended marketing calendars. Already this year we saw Jack-o-lanterns carved from watermelons in August, back-to-school campaigns launching with Amazon Prime Day in July, and Christmas advertisements taking root as soon as daylight saving time ends.”

While this provides brands with more opportunities to reach consumers, it also leads to burnout. “This cross-pollination of seasons leads to widespread consumer fatigue, with many already bored of Christmas-themed content by the end of October,” Charles notes. To combat this, brands must think outside the traditional holiday playbook and deliver campaigns that feel fresh, not formulaic.
Beyond Ads: The Rise of Experiential Marketing
Instead of leaning on tired tropes, brands should create opportunities for genuine connection. Charles advocates for experiential marketing, noting:
“The most memorable holiday moments often centre on shared experiences—moments of connection among friends and family. Brands will do well to tap into this human desire for interaction and maximize the opportunity to create immersive, personalized experiences that seamlessly blend digital and physical realms.”
From VR fashion shows to in-store Santa letter-writing stations, the possibilities are endless. “Simple, yet meaningful experiences that shoppers can share with loved ones will be highly effective,” says Charles. And beyond the emotional impact, experiential marketing offers another benefit: “These experiences serve as valuable data collection opportunities. The insights gathered can inform and enhance future campaigns, creating a dynamic feedback loop between brand and audience.”
The Creativity Imperative
But creating memorable experiences is just part of the puzzle. In today’s competitive market, creativity is non-negotiable. As Ewald Damen, Creative Director at Imagination, explains:
“To rise above the sea of generic holiday cheer, brands need to rethink the formula. Traditional advertising is a thing of the past, and social media has transformed campaign-driven marketing into something far more strategic.”
However, with audiences bombarded by highly targeted ads, the bar for relevance has never been higher. “Today’s audience is quick to scroll past anything that feels impersonal or bland, so standing out means delivering content that’s both meaningful and memorable,” Damen says.

A shining example is Glossier’s 2024 holiday campaign (above), which blended product promotion with immersive pop-up experiences in London. “This was more than an ad—it was a way for Glossier to connect deeply with its audience and leave a lasting impression,” Damen adds.
Be Bold or Be Left Behind
With the peak shopping season looming, brands must step up their game—or risk being forgotten. Mark Byrne, Director of Paid Media at Brave Bison Performance, puts it bluntly:
“The days of simply increasing your ad spend and hoping for the best are long gone. In today’s hyper-competitive landscape, success during peak season demands more than just tried-and-tested marketing tactics. It’s time to get bold and brave or risk getting left behind.”
Supercharge Your Creative
Byrne highlights a common mistake brands make during peak season: underestimating creative fatigue. “People who see an ad 6-10 times are 4.1% less likely to buy—yet, so many brands enter the peak season armed with just a handful of creative assets, hoping they’ll last until January. (Spoiler: They won’t.)”

To avoid this, brands must scale creative output without sacrificing quality. Byrne suggests leveraging AI-driven tools like Google’s Performance Max to dynamically generate fresh ad variations. “You don’t need 50 different ads—you need a few great ones that morph and adapt to different audiences,” he says.
Focus on What Works
Too often, brands waste money boosting content that’s dead on arrival. Byrne advises a smarter approach: “Posts that perform well organically are likely to perform well with a paid boost. But too many brands blindly throw budgets behind posts with no traction.”
Metrics like thumb-stop rates and dwell time aren’t just numbers—they’re signals that point to content worth amplifying. Platforms like Meta provide tools to identify high-performing posts, helping brands focus their budgets on what’s already resonating with audiences.
Tap Into the Creator Economy
TikTok has redefined what it means to create engaging, authentic content. Yet, as Byrne points out, “Still, a meagre 13% of brands use creator content in their digital ads.” That’s a missed opportunity, especially during the holiday season.
“Consumers can spot a corporate ad from a mile away. But creators? They feel like friends, and their content doesn’t just blend in—it thrives,” Byrne says. Collaborating with creators isn’t just about going viral; it’s about connecting with audiences in a way that feels genuine.
And the impact doesn’t stop at organic reach. “Boost the best-performing creator content with paid media to ensure it reaches the masses. TikTok’s Spark Ads allow you to amplify creator posts while retaining that crucial layer of authenticity,” Byrne advises.
The Holiday Strategy Playbook
Bringing all these insights together, here’s a roadmap to ensure your brand rises above the holiday noise:
- Create experiences, not just ads: Focus on activations that foster genuine connections, whether through experiential marketing or creator collaborations.
- Double down on creativity: Use tools like AI to keep your campaigns fresh and engaging throughout the season.
- Listen to your audience: Use metrics to identify high-performing content and amplify what’s already working.
- Be bold and brave: Don’t be afraid to experiment with new formats and platforms. Relevance is the ultimate currency during peak season.
A Season to Remember
Standing out in a sea of generic holiday cheer requires more than just turning up the volume. It’s about creating meaningful connections, embracing bold ideas, and delivering content that resonates.

The most successful brands this season will be those that go beyond tradition to create something unforgettable. Whether it’s a heartfelt experience, a scroll-stopping ad, or a viral collaboration, the goal is clear: to leave a lasting impression that extends well beyond the holidays. After all, in a crowded festive market, the greatest gift you can give your audience is a reason to remember you.
