As an art-director for Surface Magazine when it was a fashion bible devoted to the American Avant Garde, I developed a new format for the Front-of-Book format 'Surveillance' department. The format was based upon a grid that was intended to be as invisible and unrestrictive as possible, leaving each page open to a unique formal composition. This required designers with a solid instinct for composition, and more time to compose, so it was less practical than the standard grid. But the brand was avant garde, and I felt it important to live up to that mission.
