Lonk Wool Luxury is inspired by all things sheep and wool, influenced by the agricultural background of Lancashire and the native “Lonk Sheep”. The Holme, a 17th century stone manor house, sits within rural Cliviger binding Lancashire and Yorkshire, counties historically involved with the wool industry, an ideal setting for a wool processing, researching and exhibition facility.
Conceptually the design is driven by the idea of “pulling away” from tradition and introducing contemporary elements, such as when raw wool is treated, the fibres are pulled away, and rebound back together to create something beautiful and bespoke. This is translated through design elements that are related to the unique wool processes such as shearing, combing, binding etc.
The building is divided in four sections: the making, the exhibiting, researching and the binding. The positioning of these spaces is significant in connecting back to the history of the Holme, in which the building was separated between hosting to the south and all making/services to the north. The separation is reinforced by two individual entrances: the raw wool entrance and the reinstated main entrance leading into a large volume space that emphasises the elegant qualities of the grand timber staircase and stained glass window, both symbols in reigniting the historic character of the building.
The Holme will be significantly driven by the wool processing spaces, emphasising the traditional handmade processes and qualities that are used to produce a finished product.
