‘I painted for myself... I never believed anyone would exhibit or buy my work.’

I attended art school, and I remember that the books were full of wonderful illustrations and stories about great artists.
However, there was hardly any mention of female artists.

I must admit that it was only several years later that I began to ask myself questions and research female figures from the past.
At the time, that absence didn't resonate with me as much, I don't know why.

Yet when I discovered Leonora Carrington, it immediately seemed clear to me that she deserved a place among those pages.

Recognised as one of the greatest figures of Latin American Surrealism, despite her European origins, her art spoke of alchemy, magical realism, the force of nature and female sexuality.

The art world should be a place where everyone can express themselves freely.
But even there, unfortunately, freedom is often used in the conditional tense.
