ABOUT
Eunice Newton Foote was a 19th-century American scientist and activist, now finally recognised for being a pioneer in the experimental discovery of the greenhouse effect.
In 1856, she demonstrated that carbon dioxide and water vapour retain heat, anticipating fundamental concepts about climate.
But her work was ignored for over a century.
She was a woman in a scientific world dominated by men, and her name was obscured in favour of male colleagues.
Yet Eunice continued to study, invent and fight for women’s rights.
Her contribution has only recently been rediscovered, and today a scientific medal bears her name.
I chose to portray her because there can be a revolution even in the lightest wind.
