Imagination is considered a form of superior intelligence because it transcends the limitations of existing knowledge, enabling innovation, problem-solving, creation of new realities and it is fundamental to integrating experience as well as the learning process. Mental imagery is used to visualise desired outcomes , process past experiences and predict future events. Moreover Imagination plays a significant role in the process of making decisions.
Being more imaginative allows a person to make creative connections and inferences using their past experience and knowledge base. As a result, research indicates that more robust daydreaming is associated with superior intelligence.
Imagery has always played a significant role in medicine and healing especially in shamanism which is the oldest and most widespread way of healing with imagination. Shamans are able to alter state of consciousness (ASC) for healing purposes using various, which allows them to slip in a certain state between wakefulness and sleep, similar to lucid dreaming, where vivid imagery experiences are possible. The use of symbolic imagery, totems helps to connect with the archetype and enables the communication with the spirit world. In shamanism archetypes are ancient patterns and images that originate in the collective unconscious and serve as common, universal signs and symbols for human beings. They manifest in various forms, including dreams, myths, and genetic inheritance, and carry psychological and spiritual significance. Recording to psychological studies, archetype symbols can shift consciousness and shape ASC experiences significantly. Different stages such as oceanic boundlessness, ego-dissolution until visionary restructuralization, leading to a sense of merging with geometric and iconic images are described.
Shamans are believed to be able to communicate with the spirits, to shape-shift, to travel between the past and future and have the ability to exist simultaneously. The legendary Carlos Castaneda describes in ‚The Teachings of Don Juan’ that for shamans reality is multilayered which means they believe in the coexistence of multiple realities. By shifting their focus of attention they are able to enter those realities which are invisible to people who are not trained to do so.
