I wanted to create a series of imagery that looked at the various stages of creating a cocktail, photographed from different and unexpected viewpoints.

For this project, it all began with some pretty bad scribbles (there’s a reason I’m a photographer) and a few notes outlining what I wanted to achieve. I bundled those ideas into a quick Google Slides deck and let it sit for a few weeks before getting started.

Then came the sourcing phase; gathering everything I thought I might need. Most of it never even made it into the final shots: tubing, drill bits, funnels, hosepipe, lots of blue roll, glue, silicone… And, of course, the visible essentials; glassware, cocktail shakers, measures, and gels.

Next up was building the rigs and setups for each shot: cutting the bottoms off shakers, drilling through measures, and securing the tubing, hoses and funnels.

Time to test how everything worked. Before setting everything up properly lit and composed I needed to be sure that I was going to get what I wanted. Would the liquid flow too fast? Too slow? If that wasn’t right, the whole thing could fall flat. After a few adjustments, things started to come together nicely.

Anyway, you can guess the rest. I carved out some studio time to get this shot and retouched around other projects and I'm very pleased with the results.

A project I started back in June became a reality in October. But it was worth the time to get it exactly how I wanted.
