ABOUT
Al Jazeera English’s ground breaking launch in 2006 reflected the shift in power away from the west by being the only international news provider headquartered in the Arab world. More recently their innovative, impartial and transparent approach to world news needed to be supported and communicated with a new brand identity. As one of the creative leads in the 2012 pitch by Lambie-Nairn, my broadcast identity work helped to redefine the news brand based on the concept of AlJazeera being 'Alive with News'.
The news programme branding which we created was designed to deliver the broadest perspective, encompassing all aspects and all sides of the story. Using up-to-the minute ‘live’ content we designed a system which was driven by what is happening in the world, showing the news in its rawest form. Rather than being repeated time and time again, the look of the programme titles would be driven by the latest headlines and pictures to literally be 'Alive with News'.
I also designed the full package of in-programme news graphics. The system was designed to avoid the standard system of boxes and allow the headlines and images to lead. I worked closely with with Al Jazeera's teams in Doha, London, Sarajevo and Istanbul for final delivery in Viz.
The channel identity was designed to support and represent Al Jazeera English values and reflect AJE’s belief in telling real human stories in their fullest breadth and depth. In the channel idents we show the macro and the micro detail of the way people work, live and play in today’s world. The scale of storytelling is bold and the depictions of the human condition is honest and true.
I created this pitch work for Al Jazeera as one of the creative leads within the team at Lambie-Nairn. I partnered with Graeme Haig while direction and animation of programme titles also came from Jason Keeley and Jonny Stopford.
