For some, it may be hard to believe that it was illegal to be gay in the Armed Forces before 2000. While serving their country, thousands of LGBTQ+ veterans hid their identities at the cost of medals, careers and their mental health. To honour their role in naval history, Portsmouth Historic Quarter, Fighting With Pride and Rooster exposed untold veteran stories and created a campaign via a pride-wrapped naval vessel. The campaign sparked national conversation, drove a 94% surge in veteran enquiries for compensation, and reclaimed pride for those who lived in shame for decades. It changed lives.
