ABOUT

Design Focus: Information Design, Patient Experience, Visual Communication

This project investigates the role of visual communication and information design in improving the healthcare experience of paediatric patients within the National Health Service (NHS). The objective was to develop a communication tool that supports children before and after medical treatment by reducing anxiety, improving comprehension, and reinforcing emotional reassurance.
An illustrated accordion book was designed as a patient-facing resource to explain medical procedures and recovery processes in an age-appropriate, accessible, and non-threatening manner. The content is divided into two phases: pre-treatment, focusing on preparation and familiarity, and post-treatment, addressing recovery, aftercare, and emotional support. The accordion format enables progressive disclosure of information, allowing children to engage with content at a controlled pace and reducing cognitive overload.
The project adopts a human-centred design methodology, aligning with NHS values of compassionate care, accessibility, and patient empowerment. Visual language, colour palettes, and illustration styles were carefully selected to ensure clarity, emotional comfort, and inclusivity for young users.
