In celebration of Design Council’s 70th birthday, Design Council will be hosting Ones to Watch exhibition presenting ‘70 talented up-and-coming designers who represent the bright future of British design.’ With the show curated by emerging trends as opposed to design disciplines, various design disciplines will intersect in the show.

Collaborating with graphics design, Edward Yau, and architect/interior assistant, Yunhong Xue, we have proposed a simplistic yet elegant and highly adaptable exhibition concept including the associated materials.

Our solution is a clean, elegantly finished yet fun black metal and plywood structure that sits in freestanding clusters or against walls. At fixed 500mm, the square hollow metal rods are adjoined using varying connectors to create various heights, widths and depths. Plywood shelves are then mounted. This allows for the differing mediums of work to be showcased most appropriately, on a shelf or hung. Our solution therefore offers the flexibility to showcase work of different mediums. As a flexible structure, the arrangement can be varied and interchangeable as showcased through our differing solutions (see renders).

Navigating the journey through the exhibition are the red markings on the floor, Design Council’s signature colour. The colour pallet for the show is kept quite monotone to ensure that the greater focus falls on the exhibitors’ work. This consistency is also kept throughout the printed graphics that meets the requirements of Design Council's brand guidelines.

Product designer of the team, aside from developing the concept with team members, my creative input covered the planning of the exhibition space, creating the 3D files and rendering, fine detailing of the exhibition stands and materials including the technical detail, and sourcing for quotes of the exhibition delivering a detailed breakdown of the costs incurred.
