ABOUT
Cask ale is the freshest and most artisanal beer on the bar. But the category struggles with perceptions of being outdated and lacking in relevance as a drink of a bygone era. In recent years, an increasingly competitive on-trade landscape has seen ale edged out by exciting craft beers and experimental spirits, leading to double-digit decline in the market.
With most cask ale being drunk by 50+YO males and little adoption in younger demographics, the category has long struggled with perceptions of relevance. But the seasonal ale calendar provides the perfect opportunity to appeal to new consumers through a range of limited edition and experimental beers that challenge these prejudices. Greene King’s annual seasonal ale calendar needed to embrace the rich heritage and crafted nature of cask ale to tell stories that not only created excitement in this dusty part of the beer landscape, but also conveyed its craft credentials.
Cask ale offers a truly unique taste of British brewing and public house history, having existed at the heart of society for many centuries. We needed to invite these new consumers in to reinvigorate the category, overcoming these negative associations by telling the true tale of ale – a story of freshness, artisanal quality, and intriguing heritage.
Conveying the fresh and artisanal quality of cask ale was key, but this needed to be done in a way that shone a light on the fascinating history that sets it apart from competitor categories. Taking inspiration from the depiction of freshness in analogous categories such as coffee: stamps, seals, signatures, and other authentic marks of the maker play a critical role in communicating the hand-made credentials of ale.
Diving into the history of cask ale and pub culture in Britain presented a vast range of compelling narratives that could be told to bring the product’s rich heritage to life, with each tale informing product naming and alluding to taste attributes that hint at the consumption experience. These stories were then depicted in vividly vibrant colours that not only offer strong stand-out at the bar against the often-flat cask competitor tap-badges, but also appeal to younger demographics as a progressive range that challenges the status quo.
Greene King’s Fresh Cask Releases will ensure relevance throughout the year with a range of beers that entice with artisanal flavours and excite with intriguing narratives; showing that whoever you are, there’s a cask ale for you.
