ABOUT
Category & Discipline Subtitle:Circular Systems Illustration & Material ArchitectureThe Strategic Case Study Intro:The Context:nonCrete is a South African material science venture developed by Stephen Lamb and Andrew Lord in partnership with the Block Research Group at ETH Zurich and the CSIR. The technology replaces carbon-heavy concrete aggregate with chipped invasive alien timber felled from strategic water catchments, delivering a 180-minute fire-certified, carbon-negative structural building material. The Design Challenge:Communicating a multi-stage circular economy—spanning catchment forestry, mobile biomass chipping, on-site block pressing, unreinforced funicular vault construction, and closed-loop recycling—often collapses into cluttered, academic diagrams that confuse commercial specifiers and investors. The Creative Solution:We translated nonCrete's technical lifecycle into a wordless architectural diorama in the refined editorial illustration tradition of BA-Reps and European publishing. Framed as an isometric circular loop on an unprinted mineral-bone canvas, the artwork establishes an unhurried, intuitive visual narrative: showing how the removal of invasive trees restores mountain riverbeds while providing the raw aggregate for fire-resilient civic architecture.
