A long time ago, in the village of Arapai, lived a very mischievous six-year-old girl named Epo, who was known for her very wide diastema. She was always getting into trouble at school, at home, and in the neighbourhood.

Epo had a skin condition called vitiligo and got bullied because of it. At school, some children called her Spotted Tiger. Sometimes she cried. Other times she tried to explain to them that she was still the same as anyone else in spite of having vitiligo because her mother had always told her that she was just as beautiful as other girls her age.

In fact, her mother referred to her as the most beautiful girl in the world, and she always reminded Epo that her skin was as smooth and beautiful as silk.


Epo lived with her parents and little brother, Otim. She did not like helping her mother around the house. She only cared about eating and playing.

Epo always asked Otim, her younger brother, to do her chores in exchange for a bun. One day, Epo's mother asked her to put salt in the boiling beans. However, Epo thought to herself how delicious beans would taste with sugar instead. She then added sugar to the beans.
