3D Character Modeling
For this project I made a 3d model of my friend Craig. It all started with his caricature that then I decided to turn into a 3D model.
The drawing was then imported into Blender, where I started with simple shape then sculpted using Blender's sculpting tools.
Once the sculpting was completed, I then proceeded with retopology using an useful addon already included in Blender called Bsurfaces, that transforms the annotation tool into a powerful "polygon brush". Together with some modifiers (like shrinkwrap, mirror and subsurf), the Grid Fill tool and the Vertex smooth tool, retopology was faster and (mostly) enjoyable.
After retopology, the next step was to give the model some hair. So I created hair cards by rendering an hair particle system of some hair strands and applied it as texture to simple plane meshes.
The hair cards were then placed on the model using curves.
Next step was UV unwrapping, the exporting the model in FBX for baking/texturing in Substance Painter.
The model was then exported and rigged in Mixamo, with animations applied. The animated version was reimported in Blender to fix some bone weight issues, then some facial bones were added to the rig and the animations sorted in the NLA editor for a better blend.
An automatic lip sync system was used based upon a pre-recorded audio track. A final touch was made in After Effects, before the final edit in Premiere Pro.
The model was also used in a Unity project.
