ABOUT
University Graphic Design Brief, create a response of a core theme from the book 'The Fall'. Creating an exhibition and branding that focuses on the theme of guilt, specifically creating a fictional exhibition, website, and promotional materials focusing on the guilt experienced in the 9 circles of hell.
The brief was to create a response of a core theme from the book 'The Fall'. The book is about an ex-lawyer, Jean-Baptiste Clamence, who narrates in conversation with you. You are based in a bar in Amsterdam, which he thinks resembles Dante's Inferno; the nine circles of hell. He tells you every story about his life he can feel guilty for, and all the things he has learnt. If he helped someone, it was only to make himself feel good. he later reveals that he has only been confessing so he can be guilt free, and then can judge you, but also that everyone is guilty, and it could be anyone.
My concept is about understanding guilt can be felt by everyone, and knowing that any one person is capable of doing any bad thing is important. The idea that everyone is guilty is an interesting one, and one I felt would be best explored.
'Guilty As Hell' explores how people feel guilty and what things can make them feel that way. I have set the guilt to take place in Dante's Inferno, tying in with that setting of the Bar in which 'The Fall' is set. The aim of the exhibition is to make the audience feel guilt in each circle of hell; the exhibition focuses on the guilt that can be pulled from you throughout your experience, and provokes the audience into some personal reflection. The nine circles are on descending floors, mimicking the fall of Jean-Baptiste Clamence.
