The African continent is the largest in the world, and it is home to almost 2000 languages according to the African Union.

In recent years the views and conceptions of this vastly culturally diverse continent has been rendered to a single story of corruption despair, civil war , famine, drought and extreme poverty.

However although some of it is true and it does not ultimately apply to all the 54 sovereign states who have had of course different experiences and struggles of their own.

In short Africa is a continent and the people living in it are not homogeneous, they are very different in their cultures, traditions, religions, practices, morals, values and history.

The initiative spearheaded by 20 African states to halt desertification is by no means wishful thinking but a tall order that will have to be realised sooner rather than later due to the exponential increase in population happening on the continent especially in Sub Saharan Africa.

The Great Green Wall is not just about planting trees 15km wide and 7100 km long from Dakar to Djibouti, but it is a long term plan and ambition for food security, environmental sustainability and economic opportunity.

Since the beginning of the project, I’ve mapped out the various challenges for the countries involved and also highlighted the lack of information and awareness in the western hemisphere.
