ABOUT
My children suffer from ornithophobia, a fear of birds, so I wrote them a poem of sorts that explains how wonderful and important birds actually are.
---------------------------------------
Birdies are beautiful brilliant things,
from the point on their beak to the tips of their wings.
Grazing the grounds or free flying high,
thus follows a list, laid out, of quite why.
For one, is the music they magically make, they usually nail it in often one take.
Whistling, warbling, chirping and cheeping! Marvel at toots and melodic tweeting!
Secondly, feathers, a fancy affair, sending these squawkers swift soaring through air.
A looming long plumage, a crackle-ing crest; there’s hardly a day when they don’t look their best.
Third is a reason to do with those coats,
of waterproof down that makes them like boats,
Bobbing on oceans, in rain they won’t get,
even the slightest of littlest bit wet.
Point four, once more, is to do with those feathers,
the ones I just told you can handle all weathers,
Drab dulls or dazzle, and dappled deep dyes,
their infinite palette will fascinate eyes!
And here is a fact that few understand,
to do with something that we can’t do by hand.
Point five on the list of this full list of features,
is how they deal with miniature creatures,
that feast feverishly on food in the field,
which decimates crops, which decimates yield.
So let’s take this moment to give some high praise,
to birds that binge bugs for days upon days.
Six on the list is as good as five,
at keeping yourself and your loved ones alive,
As plentiful birds, from flowers eat nectars,
dispersing their pollen across miles and hectares.
That’s vital to cycles of growth of all plants,
which keeps us alive and able to dance.
Birdies are beautiful wonderful things,
From the point on their beak to what their rear brings.
So shout out this one, so others can hear,
Sheer nutrition for soil are the spoils from their rear!
NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS, POTTASIUM!
Who even knew that that came from their bum?
Scientists know and would like us to learn,
That a finely tuned world will continue to turn,
As they look after us if we look after them,
For Birds are a part of the ecosystem.
