The Story Behind the UK's First Influencer Marketing Agency #CompanySpotlight

Published

Founded in 2009 amidst the vibrant streets of Brixton, Redpill set out with a bold vision: to revolutionize content marketing in the social media age. With a commitment to authentic storytelling, innovative campaigns, and strategic partnerships, this trailblazing agency has grown into a powerhouse of creative influence.

From pioneering influencer marketing before it even had a name to crafting industry-defining campaigns like #LearnOnTikTok, Redpill’s journey is one of resilience, innovation, and purpose. In this exclusive spotlight, Henry Collins, Managing Partner, shares the challenges, triumphs, and values that continue to drive their success in an ever-evolving industry.

How was your company born and where are you based?

Born in 2009 in Brixton, London, we originally set up as a production company with a desire to produce brand-led storytelling for the social media age. We wanted to become “the red pill agency,” unlike all the other “blue pill agencies” out there (of which there were many).

With that, we had a desire to reimagine content marketing, fusing our production expertise with strategic partnerships—bloggers, publishers, social media channels—evolving to become the UK’s first influencer marketing agency, before the term “influencer marketing” had even been coined. This early approach helped us build strong relationships with top London influencers, who played a key role in amplifying our clients’ messages across emerging digital platforms.

What was the biggest challenge to the growth of your company?

Starting in a recession during the 2007-8 financial crisis.

Which was the first huge success that you can remember?

The very first brief. With Britvic and Tango. The perfect challenger brand to disrupt the market, timed perfectly with our offering. (And nicely followed by Paddy Power).

But I would signal our #LearnOnTikTok campaign as a defining moment. As TikTok’s very first agency partner (since 2018), we pioneered “edutainment” by creating an entire movement around educational yet engaging content. Running from 2019 to 2021, and with 4.1 billion views in that period alone, it didn’t do badly.

What’s the biggest opportunity for you and your company in the next year?

Our biggest opportunity next year is focusing on our own marketing efforts. After 15 years of successfully elevating the brands and influencers we work with, we're excited to turn that expertise inward. We’ve got a lot of amazing things to talk about, not just client work: recently achieving B Corp certification and earning the IPA’s “People First Promise.”

Looking at the industry though, I’d say AI-driven personalization and interactive social commerce, fused, of course, with authentic storytelling. Our goal remains to help brands convert interactions into transactions.

Can you explain your team’s creative process? What makes it unique?

Our creative process stands out because it’s fueled by the unique perspectives of our talented team members. Each individual brings their own background and expertise, creating a rich tapestry of ideas that drives our innovation.

With over 15 years of industry experience, we know how to combine fresh thinking with established models to produce impactful results.

Key Steps in Our Process:

  1. Immersion in Audience Insights and Cultural Trends:

    • Understand the nuances of the market.
    • Identify emerging opportunities.
  2. Blending Creativity with Human Behavior Understanding:

    • Develop creative strategies that resonate emotionally.
    • Marry cultural insights with innovative concepts.

Ultimately, our process is a collaborative journey that embraces diverse perspectives, turning insights into powerful narratives. This unique combination of strategy, creativity, and cultural awareness sets us apart in the industry.

How does your team remain inspired and motivated?

A mentor once told me, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Initially, I thought they got it wrong, but I’ve since learned they were spot on.

We’ve headlined our vision: “Empowering each other.”
And our purpose ensures we live and breathe this daily:

Purpose:

  • We exist to do better. In our work, in our team, and for our world.
  • We care about authentic human connections—between brands and creators, influencers and their followers, and us and our clients.
  • We strive to be innovative, breaking boundaries while respecting and protecting our people.

How has COVID-19 affected your company?

It reminded us that there are things so much more important than the day job.

Which agencies do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

I have incredible admiration for all the indies out there. Competing with the megas with vast teams and resources is tough, but that’s our competitive edge—we’re nimble, bold, and unafraid to push boundaries.

What is one tip that you would give to other agencies looking to grow?

Strap in.

In all honesty, stay true to your core values (both personally and professionally). Don’t be afraid to take the hard decisions.

How do you go about finding new clients/business?

Can you believe it? Up until 2023, we grew organically. Our track record has been built through reputation and referrals. Hence, next year, opening up marketing for ourselves is a big opportunity for us.

What’s your one big hope for the future of the industry?

I hope the industry will continue to value authenticity. I know the consumers will.

As Sir John Hegarty recently said:
“Creativity is an expression of self. And AI doesn’t have a ‘self.’ Just ‘output.’”

Can you share a defining moment in your company's journey that shaped its identity or direction?

Going through an IPO in 2018. We had our eyes on the prize and nearly lost everything. In the end, we matured beyond our years.

How do you foster a culture of innovation and experimentation within your team?

Trust. And accepting things aren’t always going to be perfect.

We want to break boundaries with our work, and with that, we give our team the freedom to explore new ideas freely.
