How was your company born and where are you based?

I devote my life to it; it’s like a drug. I cannot get enough!

Based in Pretoria, South Africa. My company was born 12 years ago after I made the bold decision to resign from my position as an IT Project Manager and Brand Manager for a medical company. I had a strong desire to pursue a more creative path, one where I could combine my love for design, branding, and photography.

The name "WOW" was inspired by the incredible women who supported and influenced me throughout my journey, Women of Worth. It also perfectly captures the reaction I get with every project I complete. Whether it’s a design, a photograph, or a full branding campaign, my clients’ reactions are always … “WOW, that’s beautiful.” The name was also inspired by the quote by Milton Glaser:

“There are three responses to a piece of design: yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.”

What was the biggest challenge to the growth of your company?

One of the biggest challenges to the growth of WOW, my marketing and design agency, has been wearing multiple hats while trying to scale the business. As a full-service agency offering graphic design, photography, multimedia projects, marketing, social media management, website design, and content creation, it was initially difficult to manage the workload while maintaining the level of quality and personal attention our clients expect.

Finding the right talent to build a reliable and creative team that aligns with my vision took time and patience. Additionally, keeping up with ever-evolving digital trends and client demands while staying true to our unique style and standards has required continuous learning and adaptation. Despite these challenges, each obstacle helped shape the strong, client-focused agency WOW is today.

Which was the first huge success that you can remember?

Every company has that one pivotal moment, the kind that shifts not only the direction of the business but also solidifies its identity. For us, it came in the form of a client who didn’t just believe in our work; he championed it.

Over a decade ago, we were approached by a passionate entrepreneur in need of a complete brand identity for his new venture. From the first meeting, there was a clear alignment between our creative vision and his business goals. We poured our heart and expertise into developing a visual identity that didn’t just look good; it told a compelling story.

The result? He was so impressed with the branding deliverables that he began referring other businesses to us almost immediately. What started as a single project turned into a ripple effect that brought in a wave of new clients, many of whom are still with us today. That single client has now been with us for nearly 12 years, and his ongoing support and referrals became the catalyst for our growth.

That experience shaped how we work today. It reaffirmed our belief in the power of relationships, in delivering not just beautiful design, but branding that connects and converts. It reminded us that trust, quality, and consistency build more than just brands; they build legacies.

Thanks to that defining moment, we committed to becoming more than a creative agency. We became trusted partners in our clients’ journeys.

What’s the biggest opportunity for you and your company in the next year?

The biggest opportunity for us in the coming year lies in scaling our agency into a full-service creative and marketing powerhouse by expanding our integrated offerings, combining branding, photography, content creation, social media strategy, and web development under one cohesive umbrella.

With more clients seeking all-in-one solutions, we’re perfectly positioned to become their go-to partner from concept to execution. By streamlining our services and strengthening strategic collaborations, we aim to grow our client base, enter new markets, utilise AI and build long-term brand partnerships that go beyond individual projects.

Can you explain your team’s creative process? What makes it unique?

Here’s a breakdown of the steps in our creative process when designing anything from branding to a magazine layout using the Adobe Creative Cloud suite and incorporating AI tools and editing:

Discovery & Research: Every project starts with understanding the client’s vision, goals, and target audience. We gather all relevant information through a creative brief, competitor analysis, and mood boards to align with the brand’s tone and purpose.

Concept Development: We brainstorm and sketch initial concepts, often using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to mock up early ideas. This stage includes playing with typography, colour palettes, and layout structures that reflect the brand’s identity or publication’s narrative.

AI Integration & Ideation Support: We use AI tools like Adobe Firefly or ChatGPT to enhance ideation, generate visual inspiration, write supporting content, or automate repetitive tasks, speeding up workflows while maintaining a high level of creativity and customisation.

Design Execution: Once a concept is approved, we move into full execution using Adobe InDesign for layouts, Illustrator for vector elements, and Photoshop for image editing and manipulation. We also ensure consistency in fonts, spacing, and alignment for a clean, professional finish.

Photography & Visual Enhancements: If the project includes photography, we shoot and edit the images using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, as well as AI editing tools, ensuring the visuals are polished and perfectly integrated into the design.

Client Review & Revisions: We present the draft designs to the client, gather feedback, and make revisions as needed. Collaboration at this stage is key to refining and finalizing the design to meet expectations.

Final Output & Delivery: After approval, we prepare the files for print or digital delivery, ensuring all technical specifications are met. We also provide packaged source files and digital assets where applicable.

Post-Project Optimisation & Archiving: We back up all final files and review the project for learnings and improvements, keeping our creative process evolving with each new design.

This structured yet flexible approach ensures each design not only meets the brief but also tells a compelling visual story that connects with the intended audience.

How does your team remain inspired and motivated?

Empowering my team to bring their ideas to the table. Whether it’s a new campaign concept, social media trend, or a layout direction, I let them own parts of the project. Autonomy builds pride and fuels passion.

How has COVID-19 affected your company?

COVID-19 had a profound impact on WOW Studio, as it did for many creative businesses. When the pandemic hit, one of the biggest challenges we faced was the sudden pause or cancellation of retainer contracts, particularly from small businesses and entrepreneurs who were cutting costs to stay afloat.

As photography plays a big part in our service offering, the restrictions on movement and in-person interaction meant that on-location shoots, events, and studio sessions came to a complete halt.

This created not only a financial strain but also forced us to rethink how we delivered value to our clients in a completely digital environment. We had to pivot fast. We leaned more heavily into ecommerce online websites, design, content creation, digital marketing, and social media management services we could still execute remotely.

We also explored virtual consultations, creative strategy sessions, and even began offering buy now, pay later brand toolkits for clients who needed support but couldn’t afford our full services at the time.

While it was an incredibly challenging period, it also pushed us to evolve and become more agile. We learned the value of flexibility, the importance of diversifying our offerings, and the strength of digital-first creative services. It was a season of survival, but also one of reinvention.

Which agencies do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

WPP and Ogilvy are obviously the agencies that inspire me to great lengths.

What is one tip that you would give to other agencies looking to grow?

Don’t try and copy other agencies! Be authentic and strive to always evolve with technology and times.

How do you go about finding new clients/business? (Pitching, work with retainers, etc.)

Most of my clients are word of mouth, but I position myself as a solution, not just a service and by having a consistent online presence.

Network Intentionally

  • Local business events and expos
  • Creative networking events
  • LinkedIn and Instagram DMs
  • Past clients ask for referrals or repeat work

I am always bold when talking about my work. Most people don’t know what they need until they see it.

What’s your one big hope for the future of the industry?

I hope that creativity is no longer seen as a luxury or a nice-to-have, but as an essential force for change, storytelling, and connection across industries.

As technology and AI continue to advance, I envision a future where human creativity isn’t replaced but amplified, giving rise to deeper emotional resonance, richer collaboration, and more meaningful impact. I hope the industry empowers more voices, nurtures young talent from all walks of life, and stays brave enough to break the mould time and time again.

Can you share a defining moment in your company's journey that shaped its identity or direction?

How do you foster a culture of innovation and experimentation within your team?

By creating a safe, collaborative space where creativity is encouraged and ideas are never dismissed too early. We believe that the best ideas often come from bold thinking and even bolder testing, so we actively support our team in pushing boundaries, exploring new tools, and challenging the status quo.

What measures do you take to ensure diversity and inclusion are prioritised within your company?

Diversity and inclusion are not just values; they’re a driving force behind creativity and innovation. We actively foster an inclusive environment where different voices, backgrounds, and perspectives are welcomed, respected, and celebrated. Our team reflects a variety of cultures, genders, and experiences, and we prioritise collaboration and open dialogue in everything we do.

In our hiring practices, we ensure equal opportunity by focusing on talent, potential, and passion over traditional qualifications. We also partner with diverse creative freelancers, photographers, writers, and designers, especially from underrepresented communities, to ensure our work is rich in perspective and authenticity.

When creating campaigns and content for clients, we are mindful of representation and cultural sensitivity, always striving to produce work that is inclusive and relatable to broad audiences. We also invest in continuous learning, attending workshops, engaging with inclusive design resources, and staying updated on best practices so that diversity is not just a policy, but a lived part of our company culture.

Can you describe a project that challenged your team creatively and how you overcame any obstacles?

We had a client who just could not make up his mind about the branding process he wanted for his new startup company, and changed the brief at least 4 times, which resulted in us putting extra time aside for him.

This resulted in delays with our other projects, and even though our contract states minor change requests, this was a recurring client that has brought in loads of other projects for us, but I had to draw the line. Dealing with an indecisive client who keeps changing the brief can be frustrating and costly not just in time, but also in your team’s morale and your other deliverables.

I eventually called him and said:

"We want to make sure you get the best result, but we've noticed that multiple changes to the brief have pushed back our schedule significantly. To maintain our quality and commitments to all our clients, we’ll need to implement a structured approval process moving forward. Any major changes beyond that will be billed separately, and we’ll agree on revised timelines accordingly."

How do you balance maintaining your company's unique creative voice while meeting the diverse needs of clients?

Balancing our unique creative voice with the diverse needs of our clients comes down to a thoughtful mix of adaptability and consistency. At the heart of everything we create is a signature "WOW" element, something visually impactful, emotionally engaging, and strategically sound.

While each client’s industry, audience, and goals are different, we ensure that our core values of originality, excellence, and storytelling shine through in every project. We listen carefully to our clients' needs, but we also guide them with our creative expertise, suggesting bold ideas they may not have considered. By blending their vision with our flair for standout visuals and messaging, we create work that feels authentic to their brand yet unmistakably WOW. It's about collaboration, not compromise.

What strategies do you employ to adapt to changes and trends in the industry while staying true to your company's values?

Adapting isn’t about changing who you are; it’s about evolving how you express it. Keeping a finger on the pulse of design, tech, and marketing trends is vital. I regularly attend webinars, follow industry leaders, and encourage the team to share new tools or ideas weekly. This ensures we’re ahead of the curve without blindly following every trend.

When trends emerge, whether it’s AI-generated content, bold typography styles, or storytelling reels, we explore how they can enhance our client’s brand, not just chase hype. Every trend we adopt must align with our values of impactful, meaningful, and beautiful creative execution.

We actively invest in upskilling through courses on the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, AI content tools, UX/UI trends, and digital marketing strategies. Staying sharp means we can offer cutting-edge solutions that still carry our signature WOW quality.

Can you share a memorable client success story that exemplifies your company's approach and impact?

One of the most memorable client success stories came just after COVID restrictions were lifted, when we were approached to rebrand an engineering company looking to refresh its identity for a post-pandemic world. After an in-depth brainstorming session with the team, I found myself going back to basics, picking up a pen and doodling ideas the old-fashioned way. In that quiet moment of creativity, one of the sketches just clicked. It captured the strength, innovation, and legacy the client wanted to communicate.

When we presented the full branding proposal, which included six distinct logo concepts, I quietly hoped they’d feel the same pull toward the one that had resonated with me. Without hesitation, the client pointed to that exact design, and it was an instant YES. Not only did the new logo become a point of pride for the company, but it also created a ripple effect: employees embraced it with excitement, and clients commented on how powerful and professional the new brand felt.

It was a beautiful reminder that our process deep collaboration, instinctive creativity, and attention to meaning can lead to designs that don’t just look good but truly resonate. That rebrand wasn’t just a visual shift; it was a fresh start for the business, and we were honoured to be part of it.

In what ways do you invest in the professional development and growth of your team members?

Investing yearly in their growth by having them do upgraded training on the latest software and technology.

How do you approach sustainability and ethical practices within your company's operations and projects?

Sustainability and ethical practices are woven into the way we operate, create, and collaborate. As a creative agency, we understand the influence we have not just visually, but socially and environmentally, so we make conscious choices to ensure our impact is both positive and responsible. We believe that creativity should be kind to people, to the planet, and to purpose. That’s how we ensure WOW isn’t just about great design, but meaningful impact.

Can you discuss a time when your company had to pivot or innovate in response to unforeseen challenges, and what lessons did you learn from that experience?

Do you have any websites, books or resources that you would recommend?

I read a lot, online! As a creative spending most of my time on my Mac, I seldom get time to read. So online research is what I do on a daily basis. The web has resources and technical advice in abundance.
