COHO Creative Cincinnati

ABOUT

In boxing, “a puncher’s chance” refers to a long-shot possibility that a fighter could win a match by landing a solid strike. Wolf Spirit Distillery, a genuine challenger brand born in the 2020 pandemic world, embraces the underdog status of the term as a strength and leverages the unique world of boxing across its product line.

Puncher’s Chance The Left Cross is Wolf Spirits’ new premium straight bourbon whiskey aged in Jamaican dark rum casks for one of the most unique flavor profiles in American whiskey. The craft distilling movement has inspired producers to continually push for unique spirit characteristics to intrigue connoisseurs eager for new product experiences.

This top-shelf bourbon is both bold and smooth. The rum cask aging process brings a subtle fruitiness and warm tropical notes of vanilla, brown sugar, and molasses. Aged 14 years and 96 proof, it is both smooth and luxurious and commands a price point of around $150 a bottle.

To give the new spirit a home in the Puncher’s Chance brand architecture, Wolf Spirit turned to COHO Creative for naming and packaging to showcase its unique character while aligning it with the larger brand family.

Concept:

1 - Naming:
Why The Left Cross? COHO is known for breakthrough naming and brainstormed hundreds of concepts, with a shortlist of contenders rising to the top. In the end, The Left Cross beat out all competitors for a number of reasons.

The left cross is a knockout punch, but only when delivered with balance and skill. One of the sweet science legends of the left cross is Jamaican boxer Donovan “Razor” Ruddock, who honed the punch to perfection, delivering it as part of several fight-winning flurries. Smooth, powerful, and perfected by a Jamaican champion, this knockout blow is paid homage by Puncher’s Chance The Left Cross.

2 - Design:
As with other Puncher’s Chance spirits, The Left Cross leverages visual cues from the boxing world – textures, shapes, patterns, etc. This extends the brand and gives The Left Cross new equities of its own.

Execution:
As we start to experience the labeling design, we’re immediately struck with the rich interplay of gold, black and amber, setting a tone of luxury and superior quality. The shapes of the linework and the appearance of green begin to carry us toward Caribbean rum craft.

At the center of the design, a nameplate houses The Left Cross masthead and creates an anchor for other visual elements throughout the design. Strongly paying off the Jamaican dark rum character of The Left Cross, it is bordered in gold and green and showcases a silhouette of the island at the top of the frame.

The tiger is both at home in boxing – especially in tattoos – and is a well-established equity that appears throughout the Puncher’s Chance brand. In keeping with The Left Cross’ smooth strength and luxury, our tiger appears in sinuously articulated curves as it stealthily prowls around the nameplate.

The 14-year aging reads prominently near the versioning, which is clear and provides an immediate read of The Left Cross’ distinct flavor profile.

The matte black background and curves of the bottle remind us of rounded leather boxing gloves and gradates away at the bottom to reveal the rich amber within. Atop the whole design is a green and gold seal, again celebrating the Jamaican rum traditions that define Puncher’s Chance The Left Cross.

Results:
The Left Cross brings a new and luxurious experience to Puncher’s Chance, and its rich package design is a great complement to its growing shelf presence. COHO’s thoughtful variations on brand equities have allowed the distiller to again explore new offerings while maintaining a well-unified brand that is growing quickly in awareness.

And Puncher’s Chance consumers seem to agree. Of the 1900 cases of The Left Cross produced in 2022, all are completely sold out.
