We wanted to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the moon landings. Or rather, I wanted to. I was still working at an agency at the time, so having suggested it was something we should do, I also had to make sure I was the one to do it. You've never seen a hand shoot up so fast. I would have elbowed my colleagues out of the way if I'd had to!

There is no doubt in my mind that Apollo 11 still represents mankind's single greatest achievement. And I wanted this piece to say something about just how extraordinarily unlikely it all was. The fact that it happened staggers me still.
