ABOUT

Auditory hallucinations - when our brains interpret sounds incorrectly - can lead to unexpected cultural moments.
When the 1979 hit “My Sharona” by The Knack was released, French-Canadians heard the chorus as "Mike chez Rona.” Translation? “Mike, at Rona”.
RONA, the iconic Quebec hardware chain!
The opportunity was quickly seized, and a soundalike version was recorded, with parody lyrics sung in French.
This campaign thrived in Quebec’s unique culture, where playful banter that combines English and French language is common.
Construction workers joked about it on job sites - "I guess we'll go see Mike at Rona !" Younger people loved it too, even without knowing it’s a remake!
My Sharona has indeed become Mike chez Rona, a catchy anthem celebrating the expertise found at RONA.
A perfect example of how human perception and popular culture can generate emotional and unbreakable brand associations, using music as the primary creative component.
