ABOUT
The piece is structured in three parts. The listener is first drawn in by the story and narration, supported by a subtle and emotional piano sequence. Gradually, they begin to recognize the piece as the vocals gently guide them. Finally, a second wind emerges, with a new musical section carrying the film to its conclusion.
The arrangement enhances the creative concept through reharmonization and new instrumentation. The sung melody (topline) remains unchanged, allowing the listener to recognize Luc de Larochelière’s piece. However, the harmonic sequence is fresh and unexpected, evoking strong emotion.
The arrangement is defined by:
The piano’s delicate touch, with hammers softly striking the felt.
Silence and air between musical phrases.
The fragility and innocence of the child’s voice.
The dialogue between the piano and the child.
The simple yet powerful intensity of the epilogue’s instrumentation.
These elements combine seamlessly with the naive illustrations, creating a counterbalance to the gravity of the subject matter.
