ABOUT

“Goodness is something chosen. When a man cannot choose he ceases to be a man.”
Anthony Burgess

For this project I researched the themes found within A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. The main theme’s were freewill & brainwashing. Burgess believed the freedom to choose, was big attribute to humans distinguishing them from animals & machines. This Idea of choice and freewill is found throughout the book. As Alex the main character chooses to be evil and is controlled/manipulated by the government
who force him to be a the ideal citizen though psychological methods.

It is these methods known as Aversion therapy or Conditioning that have informed my design. Aversion Therapy teaches the patient to associate a behaviour or thinking about a behaviour with a negative consequence. In the book the result of this therapy leaves the character Alex feeling nauseas at the sound of Beethoven. I then took the elements of repetition, nausea and the confinement of Alex’s free will as my main themes for my design.
