ABOUT

Personal work based on amazing @kkeeleart illustrations.

Wanted to fresh up my mind and give some love to stylized cartoon characters. Done in a week. Trying to continue this as a weekly habit let's see how things goes...

I always have a space in my heart for stylized characters, In the start of my career I use to make a lot of these styles but then I gradually moved towards the realistic genre. The concept from Kevin (@kkeeleart) reminded me that I still can make time to create those amazing characters.
I initiated this project from Zbrush starting the sculpt from a sphere(Timelapse on my youtube page). I wanted to make it as close as its Illustration but at the same time give him a realistic feel. Once I was happy with the sculpting, I did a quick retopology then switched to Maya to make a nice composition and started adding elements into the scene such as gold coin, sand etc to compose the shot. For texturing, I used Substance painter for PBR shading. With its PBR workflow, I was able to create nice believable textures and shaders in a short amount of time.

After this process, its time to set up my shaders in Arnold and render the final images. Also one thing worth mentioning, in my final renders I used the latest ACES colorspace profile to get the maximum realism I can get due to its capability to handle overexposed images even in the bright light scenario. ACES is a free, open, device-independent colour management and image interchange system that can be applied to almost any current or future workflow. It was developed by hundreds of the industry’s top scientists, engineers and end-users, working together under the auspices of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
