ABOUT

The brief was to visually communicate the underlying concepts within King Krule's song 'Easy Easy'.
For the left hand layout we experimented with mapping the song’s rhythm. We chose Futura for its shape and legibility, using a number grid to map how drumbeats fell on the lyrics. However, we decided that the song’s strongest aspect was its ironic message. We divided the lyrics into two columns: neutral and negative words. We set the latter in bold and chose Bell MT to reference the song’s inclusion of a Churchill quote.

For the second part of the layout we wanted to experiment with representing the song’s ironic outlook. Krule sings yearningly, “You spend your evenings searching for another life”. This reminded us of lottery scratch cards, often purchased in the hopes of winning an escape from everyday life. We decided to present the layout as a half—finished scratch card, thus requiring the reader to scratch the remaining squares to complete the song.
