About me

To whom this may concern.

Hi there,

My name is Calvin Drysdale. I am a South African male, from Cape Town. Im writing this letter today to give you a brief description to who I am and where I've come from but most importantly what my goals are and what I hope to achieve in the world of design.

Let me start from the beginning, I found my passion for design from the young age of 14 when I found myself attracted to the urban street art era, I found myself looking and learning from different areas of street art and design which sparked a huge passion inside of me. After spending my days gazing at different murals that presented themselves from other unique designers / artists I couldn't get enough and thought to myself that it was time to stop looking but to actually start creating letter forms and designs of my own which I could commission and legally (with permission) put up on people walls and businesses whether it be for marketing purposes, or even kids bedrooms. After years of progressing and becoming a proven creative in the field of legal street art, my passion for design in general started to grow strong and I just knew where my life journey to go, in the endless creative world of design.

I begun my journey not knowing which kind of design I wanted to do as everything to do with creativity interested me, So I made the wise decision to follow my dreams and take the next step and study at City Varisty, a well known South African, design and creative institute where my passion, motivation and drive excelled. I decided to take the path and study Multimedia design and production but after some time I found myself pulling more toward the graphic design / print side of the creative field. Everything was becoming so clear! My path was finally taking shape and I knew exactly where I needed to be. I realised that graphic design was exactly what I needed to follow my passion to the fullest version of myself in the creative field, with this in mind and nothing but goals to achieve I set out to complete possibly the best thing thats ever happened to me, but boy did it take hard work and dedication.

In my first year at City Varsity, Cape Town, There was no such thing as working hard enough or better yet there was no such thing as sleep, I took my passion and my drive and combined them to successfully complete my course, achieving a distinction in more than 2 subjects. I also had the privilege to be called one of my head lectures top students throughout the years of my studies. In the years of studies, I took my university holidays as more time to study or find new ways to excel in my career choice, so I decided to do a graphic design diploma, as well as a online short course diploma in social media marketing.

In the years after college I decided to building up a name for myself by starting myself up in the freelance world of design, after three years of gaining a strong client base and working closely and building strong relationships with them, my little freelance business was booming. As my client base started growing bigger and bigger, I decided that I would set out to look for my first job in the field, with my wide range of design skills in so many different areas of design from previous briefs (from clients I had via freelance work), from packaging design, logo creation, brochure and all in all print design, POS design, window displayers, in-store banner design, magazine layouts and even presentation designs for sales teams, a huge opportunity came to light and I was head hunted by a recruitment agency for this brand new role as a head of design, and branch manager for a successful art gallery in Cape Town called D-core Art & Soul Design.

In the year that I was working for D-Core Art & Soul Design, I came to the realisation that I wanted to better myself but most importantly try take my knowledge to another country. I wanted to mainly test my ability to change the way people see things, buy things and cherish things. So I set out on a new adventure, packed my bags and left South Africa for good, 7 hard working months in London since the day of my arrival where I found myself working hard construction work so that I could pay the rent and make it possible to reach where I wanted to be in the field. Since I've been living in London I've gone from working 75 hour weeks, having little to no rest, fighting fatigue to waitering on tables and working on freelance work for my freelance clients back in South Africa as well as little projects that I have built up from a small client base that I've created in the UK, all this! yet nothing has stopped me from doing everything in my power to achieve my goals and dreams of becoming a successful designer in the United Kingdom.

I pride myself in being a driven hard working individual, in which I will do whatever it takes to achieve my dreams and grow creatively. I have never given up on anything in my life and my passion for design and the creative world is everything to me. I live, breathe and sleep design, and have proven creative success in any brief, project that I have put my mind too.

I just wanted to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read through this cover letter and I hope you got to know me a bit better, as I would love to know you, and your company better and how much it means to you. I would love the opportunity to be a part of your team, and being beneficial to the growth of it too.

Kindest regards

Calvin Drysdale
