ABOUT

This project was the final undertaking for my MA in Graphic Design, where I developed a self-directed brief on a topic that held personal significance. The project included a 5,000-word dissertation and a detailed project outline structured around the four phases of the Double Diamond research method: Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver.
DISCOVER
I chose to address the issue of plastic pollution in the River Thames, an environmental concern close to my heart. For field research, I collected plastic litter from various beaches along the Thames in London, joining local river clean-ups to gather samples.

RESEARCH QUESTION
What are the design applications of plastic waste found in the River Thames?

DEFINE
In the Define phase, I used macro photography to explore the collected plastic litter, treating each piece as a precious object. Through this close-up lens, I transformed their meaning and value, capturing visually striking images that emphasised their forms and shapes, detached from their original context.

DEVELOP
In the Develop phase, I explored ways to repurpose plastic litter by integrating it with pottery techniques in new and unconventional ways. This process led to a unique collection of household artifacts that reframe plastic pollution within a familiar context. By transforming waste into functional, everyday objects, the collection invites a fresh perspective on sustainability and purpose in design.

DELIVER
Finally, in the Deliver phase, I hosted a creative workshop at the local community center. This hands-on event aimed to raise awareness about plastic pollution and encourage a shift in perspective—viewing these seemingly mundane, discarded objects as materials with potential for transformation. Through the workshop, participants learned about the impact of plastic waste while creating playful, upcycled artifacts, discovering the value of sustainability through creativity and play.
