ABOUT
kick back, connect with friends, and pick up city-exclusive merchandise. We developed a new global store concept for HEYDUDE, inspired by the brand’s country roots and designed to align its retail experience with its identity and the easy-going spirit of its customers. The concept introduces a “served” format that invites visitors to slow down and take their time. Here, retail becomes a platform for events, collaborations, workshops, customisation, and live performances, balancing product, theatre, experience, and community.
Launched in Austin, Texas, this debut location draws on elements from our full design concept, presenting the brand’s “Icon” format which brings together an extended product range and drives home the brand’s narrative: This is HEYDUDE country.
BRAND OBJECTIVES & CHALLENGES
Defining HEYDUDE’s Retail Identity: The challenge was to create a concept that would define HEYDUDE’s retail identity globally, while remaining grounded in its North American roots. The objective was to strengthen brand positioning and community connection, while driving engagement and conversion.
Evoking a Sense of ‘Home’: HEYDUDE sought an environment that feels warm, familiar and authentic – reflecting the lifestyle and character of the HEYDUDE customer. From materials to mood, the concept needed to convey comfort, nostalgia and ease – feelings that encourage customers to spend time in-store, interact with the brand, and fall in love with the HEYDUDE range.
Customer-Centric: It was key that the brand’s global retail concept established a cohesive retail vision that amplifies the ‘This is HEYDUDE Country’ narrative, turning brand storytelling into interactive experiences where the customer becomes part of the story. The concept needed to celebrate music, encourage customisation and unearth creativity, integrated with a strong product showcase that drives commercial outcomes.
Balance Local Relevance with Global Consistency: Embedding authentic local touches would be key to creating meaningful connections with communities. This needed to be woven into a clear and recognisable retail identity that can be scaled and flexed internationally – maintaining brand coherence while allowing for cultural nuance.
A STRATEGY FIRST APPROACH ROOTED IN CUSTOMER INSIGHT AND COMMERCIAL LOGIC
The concept takes shape as a “served” retail format – leveraging considered store zoning and a tactical layout of engagement touchpoints and product showcases to create an intuitive customer experience. A detailed study of HEYDUDE’s ranges informed a display strategy spanning Men’s, Women’s, Unisex, and Kids categories. By combining product presentation with store services and tactile experiences centred around community, creation, music, lounge, and launch, Briggs Hillier developed a set of strategic principles that can be applied across a variety of store formats and sizes, designed to scale and adapt alongside the brand and its expanding range.
‘THIS IS HEYDUDE COUNTRY’: THE CONCEPT
Materials: Celebrating its country roots through a warm, rustic design, the new global concept introduces raw brick, walnut wood, copper, tanned leather and Persian rug finishes, with a country-inspired lifestyle experience to match. With a focus on customer-centricity, it is designed to feel like a home away from home, encouraging comfort, connection and a sense of belonging.
Localisation: References to the store’s city are woven throughout, from window vinyl to mural typography and overhead steel beam signage. City-specific props further embed the local identity, while flexible fascia options can accommodate tailored expressions across different regions, enabling stores to reflect local character while maintaining a cohesive ‘family’ aesthetic.
Fascia & Entry: External A-frame signage draws in passers-by with a snapshot of in-store activity. A tri-fold screen reveals evolving brand stories with a plinth to the right highlighting the brand’s latest product launches. Upon entering the store, customers are met with “Family Stories” - curated displays showcasing footwear across Men’s, Women’s, Unisex and Kids’ ranges.
Display: Display storytelling continues along the perimeter, where hero bays serve as the setting to narrate a curated mix of footwear, apparel, and accessories set against patterned backdrops. Flexible pegboard systems support the wider product range with copper panels providing visual contrast. In the kids’ zones, vinyl overlays introduce a playful, distinctive character.
Lounges: Lounge areas are central to the store experience, acting as natural social hubs. Customers are invited to spend time in-store not browsing or shopping, but simply being. Sofas at the front and rear, with additional seating in the form of poufs, alongside rugs, lamps and cushions enhance the relaxed, welcoming lounge-like atmosphere.
Performance Stage: Clad in walnut, the performance stage is a multipurpose space that shifts from a curated retail environment into a platform for local artists. It invites customers to explore unique products, enjoy live performances, or pick up a guitar to add their own sound to the space. Cinema box style signage promotes stage events and curtains add a touch of classic theatre.
Customisation: A central “HEYMAKERZ” customisation hub showcases HEYDUDE Blanks – a new all-white, “blank canvas” collection – alongside items designed for complete product customisation. The station includes laces, beads, coloured pens, pin badges (including location-exclusive designs), and more – putting product style directly into the hands of its fans.
Cash Desk: Set against a raw brick backdrop, the cash desk is positioned centrally at the rear and framed by two old-style barn doors, with accessory displays on either side. Behind it, an alcove houses a large digital screen showcasing regionally relevant content.
Outdoor Terrace: An enclosed terrace features bleacher-style seating with integrated LED lighting, complemented by cushions, rugs, artwork and foliage for added comfort. A mobile bar supports flexible event hosting, while bus stop-style signage and A-frames provide adaptable promotional opportunities. A large-scale mural introduces vibrant colours, alongside a distinguishing “Hey Dude” sign for a playful and eye-catching finishing touch to the space.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Launched in Austin, Texas, the capital of a state celebrated for its country roots and deep influence on the country music scene, this concept delivers a distinctive retail experience. Capturing a spirit that’s easy-going, creative, and individual, the concept isn’t tied to any one place. Inspired by the new concept, Austin simply marks the first store in a series of ‘Full Price’ and ‘Icon’ stores set to roll out across North America and the rest of the world, because “HEYDUDE Country isn’t a place, it’s a headspace.” – Lewis Capaldi, Musician and HEYDUDE brand ambassador.
