Brandon King Motion Designer

ABOUT

Set by FIFO Live Visual Artists, looped visuals were required to compliment a live stream by EDM and beatboxing artist Beardyman. Split into foreground, background and logo loops, they needed compositing alongside a keyed three-minute clip of the producer. Completed as part of the Motion Design Professional course by Created Academy.

A combination of optical illusion, refraction and distortion effects entrance the target audience, with audio-adaptive parameters to provide variety across the run-time.

With limited design constraints and a 3-minute duration, it was difficult knowing where to start, particularly with no story or script to dictate the visuals.

The solution for this proved to be just opening up Cinema 4D/After Effects and experimenting. Adjusting orientation, materials, form, provided surprising variation, allowing many options to be created in a short period of time.

Due to the refractive rings being transparent, the foreground and background loops required rendering as one. As a result, the timing for the foreground loop became less flexible, with certain beats unable to be hit. Investigating, high-end plug-ins for After Effects may have resolved this.

Besides use of the wiggle expression for hue and motion, the background loop was exported multiple times, rotating clockwise and anti-clockwise on the Y and Z axes for variation.
