ABOUT

Toyota New Zealand.

Toyota has not only grown to be one of Australia's leading automotive companies, it has become part of New Zealand’s culture.

Toyota New Zealand began importing the inner workings of vehicle electric car charge units. The market was beginning to learn about these new vehicles but Toyota were among the leading companies to implement this technology. Customers purchased these vehicles without there being many public charge stations available, it seemed only fit to provide this facility for their customers.

The brief, to design housing to for the charge units and create clear zones to identify to customers where to charge their vehicles.

Amongst research I found it imported to design not only a freestanding unit but a wall mounted version as well. Distinctive colours were chosen which suited the market but also separated the zone from the Toyota brand as they’d open the stations to all vehicle models in the future. I produced preliminary sketches in combination with computer visuals for pitch purposes and then built 3D renders in illustrator due to time and budget restrictions for sign-off by Toyota.

Sadly, I departed the design firm before I could see my designs develop into the market, although had a great experience and it’s not something every designer gets to do. I enjoyed immensely the 3D render work as this also isn’t something I get to do often.
