Graduate CV Tips

Published

Your graduate CV should clearly emphasise your qualifications but you also need to think about what is going to set you apart from the crowd.  Think carefully about things you can mention that are relevant, as well as your invaluable skills and experiences you have built up over the past couple of years.

Here are some useful tips to help you to get your CV noticed:

  1. Your CV should be no longer than 2 pages. Layout is down to preference and dependent on the sort of role you are after, for example if you want to get into design a creative layout can help you get noticed. Make sure it is easy to digest at a glance though; the average time spent on a CV is just 8 seconds.
  2. Include full details of the course that you have recently completed, the grade you obtained (if it was an upper second class or a first), the modules studied in your final year and details of any thesis or dissertation. Highlight what you enjoyed and excelled in, as these are usually the areas you want to get into.
  3. Provide information on any industrial placements or internships undertaken during your studies or any time spent studying overseas. Internships are a great way to not only get experience, but often result with a foot in the door with the opportunity to prove yourself. If you are in the position to do one, definitely consider it!
  4. Include information on any work experience that you have gained including all voluntary, part-time and temporary work and details of a gap year if relevant. Even if your work experience isn’t directly related, employers will like to see that you have already have evidence of a work ethic.
  5. Highlight any extra-curricular activities you were involved in at university such as membership of societies or sporting teams. Companies like to see people dedicating their time to other things outside their course and that they are active outside of work; it helps show you are well balanced.
  6. Specify any academic achievements or awards you may have won and any significant achievements in your personal life. This is your chance to be loud and proud; these are the things that will really set you apart from others as they will be so unique to you.
