How Much Should I Be Getting Paid as a Creative in the UK?

Published

The question that headlines this article is one I’ve asked myself more often than I care to admit. It’s often when I’m in the midst of some soul-destroying piece of work I took on at the last minute or when I’m fishing behind the sofa cushions for mortgage money but it’s one that should only really be asked and answered, once.

The answer is, in simple terms, you’re only worth as much as you think you’re worth, at least as far as freelancing is concerned. As a freelancer, you see, I get to set my own rates and those rates, by necessity, might fluctuate as the market demands but the underlying song remains the same – I will charge as much as I feel my time and expertise is worth in correlation to what the rest of the market is charging.

To that end, I thought I’d put together a handy little guide for creatives of all shades and experience levels based on the recent salary benchmarks on UK-based creative salaries put together by DNA’s Salary Snapshot Q4 2024. The plan is to help you, the creative professionals that call Creativepool home, assess if you’re being paid fairly and equitably in today’s competitive market.

Why Salary Benchmarks Matter

  • Retention vs. Recruitment: Fair compensation not only attracts top talent but also retains them, fostering loyalty and reducing turnover costs.
  • Market Dynamics: Economic fluctuations, industry growth, and skill demand affect salary standards.
  • Transparency: Understanding the current pay landscape empowers you to negotiate effectively, whether you’re an employee or an employer.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, there’s a pretty high ceiling to reach for, maybe not “finance industry” high, but I’d argue high enough.

Of course, those rates are going to depend on a myriad of factors, not least of which is location, particularly if you live in the centre of London. As a rough benchmark though, I’d argue it’s pretty handy for freelancers fresh to the game, at least when pricing up a gig.

The truth is that the creative industry is incredibly fast-paced and ever-changing, but knowledge is power and hopefully, these insights will allow you all to stay ahead of the curve.
